Why responsible gambling matters

Gambling works best when it stays entertainment – a choice you make for fun, not something you feel compelled to do. Jokery offers slots, live games and sports betting to players in the UK, and like any platform where real money changes hands, it carries risk alongside the enjoyment. The difference between a good session and a problem often comes down to awareness: knowing when to stop, recognising the early signs that things are shifting, and having a plan before you start.

This page is here to help you stay in control. You'll find warning signs worth watching for, a short self-assessment, the tools Jokery provides to manage your account, and direct routes to professional support across the UK. If you're reading this because you're worried – about yourself or someone else – that worry is worth listening to. Help is available, confidential, and free.

Behaviour that should worry you

Problems with gambling rarely announce themselves. They build gradually, often disguised as a streak of bad luck or a rough month. The signs below aren't a diagnosis, but if several feel familiar, it's time to take a step back and talk to someone.

  • Spending more than you planned, or chasing losses with extra deposits
  • Borrowing money to gamble, or gambling with money set aside for bills
  • Lying about how much you've spent or how often you play
  • Feeling restless, irritable or anxious when you're not gambling
  • Gambling to escape stress, loneliness or low mood
  • Neglecting work, family or other commitments because of time spent on the platform
  • Trying to cut down or stop, but finding you can't

None of these on its own means you have a problem, but together they form a pattern. If you recognise more than one or two, reaching out for support is a sensible next step – not a sign of failure.

A short self-check

These questions are adapted from tools used by UK support services. Answer them honestly – nobody else needs to see your answers.

  • Have you ever felt the need to bet more money, more often?
  • Have you ever had to lie to people close to you about how much you gamble?
  • Has gambling caused you any problems with money, work or relationships?
  • Do you feel guilty or ashamed after gambling?
  • Have you tried to win back losses by gambling again the next day?
  • Has gambling made you less interested in family, friends or hobbies?
  • After losing, do you feel you must return as soon as possible to recover what you lost?

If you answered yes to three or more, consider speaking to a trained adviser. The services listed below are confidential, non-judgemental and staffed by people who understand what you're going through.

Jokery's deposit and time controls

The operator provides two account-level tools designed to help you stay within limits you've set for yourself. Both are managed through your account settings on the platform.

Tool How it works
Self-exclusion Prevents you from using your Player Account for an indefinite period. The operator closes the account and refunds any remaining balance. This is the strongest option available and cannot be reversed quickly.
24-hour Cool Down A temporary break from gambling that is not a self-exclusion. You can extend a Cool Down period immediately if needed. Once set, it can only be shortened after 24 hours have passed, unless the existing period is due to end within that timeframe.

Worth remembering: these tools are most effective when you set them before you feel out of control. If you're having a good week, that's the moment to set a deposit cap you can live with. If you're chasing losses, the Cool Down gives you breathing room to reset.

UK support organisations

Help is available right now, no matter where you are or what time it is. The services below are free, confidential and staffed by people trained to support you without judgement. You don't need to have hit rock bottom to call – reaching out early is the smartest thing you can do.

GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The call is free from mobiles and landlines, and you don't have to give your name. Trained advisers offer immediate support, help you work out your next steps, and can refer you to face-to-face counselling if that's what you need. Visit gamcare.org.uk for live chat and email support.

BeGambleAware provides information, advice and direct access to the National Gambling Treatment Service. Their site, begambleaware.org, includes a treatment finder that connects you to local NHS services and specialist counselling. Everything is free at the point of use.

Gordon Moody offers residential treatment programmes for people whose gambling has become unmanageable. They also run an online therapy service. This is intensive, structured support for those who need more than a phone call. Find them at gordonmoody.org.uk.

GamStop is a free national self-exclusion scheme. Register at gamstop.co.uk and you'll be blocked from all UK-licensed gambling sites for a period you choose – six months, one year or five years. It's not instant (allow 24 hours for it to take effect), but once active it's very difficult to reverse, which is the point.

Blocking software

If you want a technical barrier between you and gambling sites, two pieces of software are widely recommended in the UK:

  • Gamban (gamban.com) blocks access to gambling sites and apps across all your devices. It's a paid service, but many treatment providers can arrange free access if cost is a barrier.
  • BetBlocker (betblocker.org) is free and works on desktops, phones and tablets. You set the block period when you install it, and it can't be removed until that time is up.

Neither is perfect – determined users can find workarounds – but both add friction, and that moment of friction is often enough to break the automatic reach for a betting app.

Taking a break

Not every problem needs a crisis response. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is step away for a week, a month, or however long feels right. Use Jokery's Cool Down tool if you're taking a short break from this platform specifically, or GamStop if you want a wider barrier across the industry.

Good to know: taking a break doesn't mean admitting defeat. It means you've noticed something shifting and you're doing something about it before it gets worse. That's not weakness – it's exactly the kind of self-awareness that keeps gambling enjoyable for those who choose to return to it later.

Protecting minors

Access to Jokery is restricted to those aged 18 and over (18+). If you share a device with someone younger, consider installing parental-control software such as Net Nanny or Qustodio. Both can block gambling sites by category and prevent accidental access by children or teenagers in the household.

Talk to young people in your life about gambling in the same way you'd talk about alcohol or other adult activities – not as forbidden fruit, but as something with real risks that requires maturity and self-control. The earlier those conversations happen, the better equipped they'll be when they're old enough to make their own choices.
